Our Speech and Language therapists work with tamariki who have a range of communication challenges. They can help children and teenagers improve their communication skills and confidence.

What is Speech and Language Therapy?

Pediatric speech and language therapy (SLT) involves working with children and teenagers who have a range of communication challenges such as:

  • Auditory processing
  • Language processing
  • Dyspraxia
  • Phonological difficulties
  • Dysphasia

SLT assists young people to improve their communication skills via training in:

  • Phonological awareness
  • Active listening skills
  • Thinking skills and memory skills in oral and written outputs

Our Speech and Language therapist can tailor the initial assessment to best meet the needs of your child. The assessment will include a combination or components that best address your tamariki's unique situation.

What are the benefits of Speech and Language Therapy?

Improved communication

At the most basic level speech therapy can help children better communicate their needs and wants. Helping your child learn the tools to effectively communicate opens up more opportunities and helps them become more independent as they grow.

More effective social skills

Effective social skills are essential for forming fulfilling, lasting relationships. Speech and language therapy can help your child better understand both verbal and non-verbal communication cues and how to handle the different social situations they will face.

Increased self-esteem and independence

Children who have difficultly expressing themselves can easily become frustrated, withdrawn and isolated. Improved communication gives your child the ability to better form and maintain friendships. This combined with increased independence will help build confidence and self-esteem.
